Self-Drilling Screw Applications: A Guide by Industry and Substrate

How self-drilling screws are used in construction, HVAC, roofing, solar, automotive, and appliance manufacturing. Match screw sizes and drill point die series to your specific application.

Why Self-Drilling Screws Are Widely Used in Modern Assembly

Self-drilling screws (also called TEK screws) eliminate the need for pre-drilled pilot holes. A single fastener drills, taps, and fastens in one operation — which can significantly reduce assembly time compared to traditional two-step drilling and fastening.

This guide introduces application requirements. Choose the rated finished fastener first, then specify the pointing die from its drawing, actual wire and catalog geometry. An industry name or plate thickness is not a universal L-series mapping.

Construction and Steel Framing

Light-Gauge Steel Framing (0.5–1.2 mm)

One of the largest markets for self-drilling screws worldwide. Used for:

  • Steel stud-to-track connections
  • Drywall attachment to steel studs
  • Metal furring channel installation

Typical screw sizes: IFI #6–#8 (DIN ST3.5–ST4.2) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests.

Medium-Gauge Steel Construction (1.2–4.0 mm)

Structural connections in commercial buildings:

  • Purlin-to-rafter connections
  • Girt-to-column connections
  • Bridging and bracing

Typical screw sizes: IFI #10–#12 (DIN ST4.8–ST5.5) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests.

Engineered Steel Connections

Load-bearing connections require approved fasteners and project-specific joint design. This includes bracing, primary frames, bridges and other engineered structures; a longer point or L-series code does not grant structural suitability.

  • Steel-to-steel structural connections (purlins, girts, secondary framing)
  • Multi-layer steel-to-steel shear connections
  • Heavy cladding and sheeting attachments

Typical screw sizes: IFI #12–#14 (DIN ST5.5–ST6.3) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests.

Roofing

Metal Roofing Panels

One of the highest-volume applications globally:

  • Panel-to-purlin fastening (through-fastened roofs)
  • Panel-to-panel side lap connections
  • Ridge cap and flashing attachment

Typical screw sizes: IFI #10–#14 (DIN ST4.8–ST6.3) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests. Special requirements: Screws often need EPDM rubber washers for weatherproofing

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Concealed-fastener systems:

  • Clip-to-purlin connections (hidden fasteners)

Typical screw sizes: IFI #10–#12 (DIN ST4.8–ST5.5) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests.

HVAC and Ductwork

Sheet Metal Ductwork (0.5–1.0 mm)

High-volume application for smaller screws:

  • Duct joint connections
  • Duct-to-flange fastening
  • Damper and register mounting

Typical screw sizes: IFI #4–#8 (DIN ST2.9–ST4.2) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests. Volume note: HVAC manufacturers are among the highest-volume users of small self-drilling screws

Solar Panel Mounting

A growing market segment:

  • Solar rail-to-roof connections
  • Panel clamp-to-rail fastening
  • Ground mount structural connections

Typical screw sizes: IFI #10–#14 (DIN ST4.8–ST6.3) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests. Material note: Choose corrosion protection and fastener construction for the actual exposure and project design life; stainless body construction alone does not establish steel-drilling capacity.

Automotive and Transportation

Vehicle Body Assembly

  • Body panel attachment to frame
  • Interior trim mounting
  • Under-body component fastening

Typical screw sizes: IFI #6–#10 (DIN ST3.5–ST4.8) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests. Special requirements: Often require corrosion-resistant coatings (zinc flake, Dacromet)

Trailer and Truck Body Manufacturing

  • Trailer wall panel attachment
  • Floor-to-frame connections
  • Roof panel fastening

Typical screw sizes: IFI #10–#14 (DIN ST4.8–ST6.3) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests.

Appliance Manufacturing

  • Appliance housing assembly
  • Internal component mounting
  • Vent and cover attachment

Typical screw sizes: IFI #4–#8 (DIN ST2.9–ST4.2) Tooling selection: Match the approved point drawing to the specific catalog code, flute length and available style. Production check: Confirm blank material, die-holder fit and pointing trials independently from installation tests. Volume note: Appliance factories use large quantities of self-drilling screws, making die longevity an important consideration

Application Selection Matrix

Application Main assembly conditions to establish
HVAC ductwork Sheet material, layers, burr control and coating
Steel framing Member thickness, loads and approved connection design
Exposed roofing Rated substrate, washers, seating and weather-tight system
Standing seam clips Clip and substructure thickness, approved system fastener
Solar mounting Corrosion exposure, material compatibility and system loads
Vehicle attachments Approved joining method, vibration and customer control plan
Appliances Clearances, panel thickness, coating and assembly method

For Die Manufacturers and Screw Producers

Understanding end applications helps you:

  • Plan tooling stock: Use actual orders and approved drawings, including matched spare pairs
  • Advise customers: Separate finished-fastener rating from actual wire-forming conditions
  • Compare new applications: Trial the required geometry and material before estimating volume or tool life
